There are many composite decking products in the market, and, like most products, you get what you pay for.
Composite decking is generally more expensive than timber to buy. However, timber usually requires treating before use with an oil, paint and varnish, which adds to the cost. Additionally, in Australia’s climate, re-treatment is usually required every one or two years.
If treatment and maintenance costs are included, composite decking has a lower total cost after 3 to 5 years.
Most composite decking is now 135-140mm wide. Prices start from around $11 per linear metre. Coated or co-extruded decking, a better anti-fade, anti-stain technology starts at around $15 per linear metre.
High quality co-extruded decking, like some USA imported brands, can be in excess of $20 per linear meter.
The best way to calculate a comparison cost is to calculate the “per square metre cost”, to account for different board widths and lengths.
Comparison costs can also include additional costs for clips and screws and delivery.
There is no “golden rule” for calculating the total cost of a deck.
There are three components of cost for building a deck:
1. Framing materials
2. Decking materials; and
3. Construction Labour
For deck replacements, the framing materials are already in place, but there is an additional cost, mainly labour, in removing the old decking and repairing the sub-frame for new decking.
Broadly, it seems decking materials can be in the range 30-40% of total cost for a new deck, and up to 50% for a replacement deck. However, site conditions , type of decking material and any complexity like steps can have a significant impact on total cost.
In summary, the answer is “depends” and the best way to find out is get quotes.
Price is not the only factor to consider – as in most goods and services value is critical.
We believe there are 7 Factors to consider when choosing composite decking, summarised as follows:
Latest technology solid composite decking will have greatest longevity in terms of look and integrity.
Dimensions of decking boards contribute towards installation time and cost and wastage.
Finish is what everyone looks at, and with a wide variety of finishes, designer looks that co-ordinate with connecting indoor areas are possible.

It is important when comparing products and pricing to ensure comparisons are on a like for like basis. This is why we quote prices on a square meter basis, so that different board lengths and widths do not distort any comparison.
A special case is the market leader, MODWOOD, where you really need to understand the cost of boards plus clips to get a true comparison. One of the reasons for buying composite decking is to avoid screws through the boards!
Our custom lengths for a project adds significant value in terms of lower installation costs and less wastage.
In addition, our pricing for DECKER Design is for a 25mm thick board which is one of the thickest standard composite decking boards on the market, so our price delivers strength for 450mm joist spacing, whereas competitor products may not.
Ultimately we believe we offer quality and value which may not always mean the cheapest price.
